India attained its freedom in 1947, but several problems still plague our great nation. On our 71st Independence Day, we speak to some celebrities from television about issues that they feel should get more attention in the country.

Aishwarya Sakhuja
I want independence from unnecessary judgements passed on women. People comment on how we should live, what we should wear, what time we should step out of the house, etc. I want freedom from people who believe they understand why rapes, stalking, or molestation happen; from people who feel how it’s always the woman who is at fault.

{{/usCountry}}I want freedom from traffic, as a huge chunk of my time is spent travelling to the set every day. As residents of the crowded-yet-adjusting city of Mumbai, we enjoy a lot of freedom, but we are also forced to waste time in traffic. I know it’s not a major issue in our country, but it’s an issue that has been neglected for a long time. We all need to reduce our travel time.

This Independence Day, I need freedom from social media, and everyone else does too. Today, we start our day by going online and end it while checking who posted what on social media. I do it too, and it is an addiction that everyone needs to be rid of. I also need freedom from illogical religious beliefs or superstitions. It’s high time that our country is free from regressive thoughts perpetrated by religious beliefs or superstitions.

This Independence Day, I wouldn’t mind azaadi (freedom) from the façade of social media. We’ve beaten the whole purpose of this simple platform, which was meant to be an extension of one’s personality. I miss the good old days when someone rang me up to say ‘hi’ instead of commenting on my posts online.

It’s crucial to strike a balance between your personal and professional lives, and to do so, one should work only six hours a day. This Independence Day, I want freedom from long working hours. It’s important to have enough time for yourself and your family, as it ensures peace and a healthy state of mind. And we all know that for effective results at work, you have to be authentic and self-centred. Don’t get me wrong, by that I mean making yourself the ‘centre’ of your own life.
