After Fuel, How Rising Onion Prices Are Hitting People's Pockets

Description: Onion prices have risen by over 25% in the past month, putting additional pressure on household budgets across India. Retail prices have climbed from around ₹40 per kg at the end of June to nearly ₹50 per kg in July, making the kitchen staple more expensive for consumers. The price rise has also created challenges for the government, which procures onions for its buffer stock to stabilize retail prices during shortages. With market prices remaining elevated, the government has revised its procurement price for the sixth consecutive time, increasing it to ₹2,300 per quintal (100 kg) from the initial ₹1,875 per quintal.
