The two men were freed nearly three years later when Washington withdrew its extradition request for Meng. The diplomatic standoff left lasting mistrust between Ottawa and Beijing. But with President Donald Trump intensifying his trade war against Canada, Ottawa now appears to be seeking cautious common ground with its former rival, China.
