U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated that India will sharply reduce imports of Russian oil by the end of the year, calling it a “big thing” and describing the shift as a gradual process. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally assured him that India’s dependence on Russian crude would “be down to almost nothing.” The remarks came shortly after Trump imposed new sanctions on major Russian oil firms, Rosneft and Lukoil, to pressure Moscow over the Ukraine war.
