Congress questions India-US trade deal, ‘step towards Atmanirbhar or America-nirbhar Bharat…’

Congress leader Randeep Surjewala has attacked the India–US interim trade framework, asking whether it is a step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat or “America‑nirbhar Bharat,” and alleging it risks farmers’ livelihoods, India’s energy security and digital sovereignty. In his remarks, he claimed the Feb 6, 2026 framework could open India’s market to US farm and food items and warned this could undercut domestic producers across multiple states. The government has denied giving tariff concessions that would hurt Indian farmers, with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal saying India protected farm interests and that modalities/product lines will be clear only in the final interim agreement.
