Covid Omicron: Karnataka changes rules for travellers, intensifies curbs

- Karnataka intensified curbs amid rise in Covid-19 cases and omicron variant scare. CM Basavaraj Bommai held a meeting with health & disaster dept experts on Saturday. The state govt mandated international travellers to undergo RT-PCR test upon arrival. It also said strict monitoring to be in place in districts bordering Kerala & Maharashtra. On Saturday, two people had tested positive after reaching Bengaluru from South Africa. Both the persons have now been found positive for delta variant of the coronavirus. The WHO named the new Covid variant B.1.1.529, which has been detected in South Africa as Omicron. Meanwhile, PM Modi chaired a meeting to review public health preparedness & vaccination situation. Karnataka reported more than 400 fresh cases of Covid and at least six deaths on Saturday.
