Crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong: Anti-Beijing news outlet raided, shuts down
Published on Dec 29, 2021 08:14 pm IST
Amid mounting concerns over the erosion of liberty in Hong Kong, a pro-democracy news outlet has shut down after a police raid. The former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997 with the promise of protection of rights. After the 2019 anti-govt protests, China imposed a sweeping national security law in the semi-autonomous city, which restricts freedoms promised to Hong Kong. Since June last year, over 100 pro-democracy supporters have been arrested under the law.
