Cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir said that he had thought of leaving cricket in 2007 after being left out of India's ODI World Cup squad. In 2007, India were knocked out in the group stages of the ODI World Cup in the Caribbean. However, in the same year, the Men in Blue lifted the maiden T20 World Cup in South Africa under MS Dhoni's captaincy. Gambhir finished as the leading run-scorer in the tournament. The left-handed batsman was instrumental in India's two World Cup-winning squads. The cricketer announced his retirement in 2018 after completing 10,000 runs in List-A cricket.
