Portrayal of cancer onscreen needs a reality check: Manisha Koirala

Updated on May 31, 2017 12:28 pm IST

While promoting her film 'Dear Maya', Manisha Koirala said that this is a good time for women actors to grow in Bollywood. She also talked about the portrayal of cancer in films. Cancer is much more amenable to treatment today but when it comes to Bollywood; the story of cancer over the last few decades is still the same. Be it 'Kal Ho Naa Ho', 'Rockstar', 'Katti Batti' or 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil', the film's plot always ends with one of the actors dying due to this severe disease. Manisha Koirala, who herself fought ovarian cancer believes that now the makers need to change their vision regarding this. The 'Bombay' actress, who was in the national capital for her upcoming flick, 'Dear Maya,' says it's time to get real about it and it should not spread panic among people. Bollywood filmmakers generally are quick to showcase the changing trends in Indian society and culture but when it comes to dealing with cancer, they fail to do justice and portray a negative image of the disease, showing disrespect to the cancer survivors. On the work front, Manisha will be next seen in 'Dear Maya.' The film is slated to release on June 2.
