The symbolic Doomsday Clock, which represents concerns about humanity destroying the planet, was advanced by 30 seconds to two minutes before midnight because of looming threats of nuclear war and climate change. The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, which announced the change, cited the “hyperbolic rhetoric and provocative actions” of North Korea and the US, nuclear tensions between the US and Russia, tensions in the South China Sea, the build-up of the nuclear arsenals of India and Pakistan, and uncertainty over the Iran nuclear deal for its decision.
