India seeks to legalise Indian Standard Time

Updated on Mar 29, 2018 06:33 pm IST

India is about to legalise Indian Standard Time (IST) which will come from the National Physical Lab. Currently, most phones and electronic devices get their time from servers in the US, which can vary by a few seconds. Those few seconds however are crucial for security, especially cyber, defence and for bank frauds. After the IST is legalised, it will be the only source that will be able to provide time to devices in India. There's another pressing issue in the country that the north eastern states have been demanding for, which is a separate time zone, given that they get daylight nearly two hours before the easternmost parts of India.
