Justice only for rich, powerful: Uphaar fire victims’ kin on SC rejecting plea

Updated on Feb 20, 2020 05:44 pm IST

Family of victims who died in the 1997 Uphaar cinema tragedy commented on the Supreme Court's latest decision. The top court rejected a curative petition seeking enhanced punishment for real estate barons Sushil and Gopal Ansal. In 2015, SC had effectively let off the Ansal brothers with a Rs 30-crore fine each, over the tragedy which killed 59 people. Two years later, SC ordered a one-year jail term for Gopal Ansal, while exempting Sushil Ansal from prison time due to his old age. The latter had already served a reduced sentence of five months. Neelam Krishnamoorthy, who has been leading the fight for justice, expressed dismay at the latest decision by Supreme Court.
