Hundreds of farmers of southern India gathered at the banks of a river, the lifeline of the state, for a ritualistic prayer today. 'Aadiperukku' is a annual ritual peculiar to the Cauvery delta, the rice-growing belt, in southern Tamil Nadu, celebrating the rising of the river, which is expected on the 18th day of the solar month, Aadi corresponding to the 2nd or 3rd of August.
