Assam crisis: PM asks Gogoi to control violence

As the situation is deteriorating day by day in Kokrajhar district of Assam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday directed chief minister Tarun Gogoi to bring law and order under control in the state. With the death toll reaching 21, an estimated 50,000 refugees have taken shelter in relief camps so far, while those affected in the ethnic violence are said to be more than 60,000. Meanwhile, Gogoi said that army has been put on alert and more forces have been deployed in the area. Union home secretary RK Singh said that he is monitoring the situation and has been constantly in touch with the concerned authorities.
