Dearth of labour plagues diamond industry in Gujarat

Dearth of labour for the cutting and polishing jobs has plagued the famous diamond industry in Surat. The skyrocketing prices of raw diamonds remain one of the key factors that have led thousands of workers to shift from diamond industry to other businesses. The Surat diamond industry is worth about Rupees 800 billion and constitutes more than half of the total diamond exports from India.
