Mamdani shames Starbucks CEO over $95800000 salary, joins protesting staff in New York City

Starbucks has agreed to pay $38.9 million to settle New York City’s claims that the company repeatedly violated fair-scheduling laws—over 500,000 times in three years. Mayor Eric Adams called it the biggest worker-protection settlement in NYC history. The announcement came as baristas across NYC and other cities held strikes demanding better conditions, joined by officials like Senator Bernie Sanders and Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. Under the settlement, more than 15,000 workers will receive payments, while Starbucks maintains the law is difficult to comply with due to last-minute schedule changes. New York’s fair-workweek law, one of the first in the U.S., aims to protect workers from unstable “on-call scheduling,” a practice increasingly restricted in major U.S. cities.
