Speaker Om Birla returned to the chair in the Lok Sabha after a no-confidence motion moved by the opposition seeking his removal was defeated in the House. Addressing MPs, Birla rejected allegations of bias and said he always allows members to speak, but strictly within parliamentary rules and procedures. The motion was rejected during proceedings presided over by Jagdambika Pal, amid loud protests and sloganeering from opposition benches. Pal urged MPs to return to their seats for a formal division, but as disruptions continued, the motion was eventually defeated through a voice vote. The notice seeking Birla’s removal was submitted by Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Indian National Congress in the Lok Sabha, invoking Article 94(c) of the Constitution. Following the notice, Birla had chosen to recuse himself from presiding over the House until the matter was resolved, calling it a moral decision. Watch the video to find out his first reaction.
