Perarivalan walks free after 31 years in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case

• A 31-year long legal battle has finally come to end for AG Perarivalan, the convict in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's Assassination case. The Supreme Court ordered his release after noting that the Tamil Nadu governor had delayed the decision to remit Perarivalan’s sentence. A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao, BR Gavai and AS Bopanna noted that powers of the governor under the Constitution’s Article 161 cannot be the reason for the delay and can be subjected to judicial review. Convicted in 1998 for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, Perarivalan was only 19 years old when he was arrested for purchasing the 8-volt battery that was used by the assassins to trigger the belt bomb that killed Rajiv Gandhi.
