In a fierce critique at the UN Security Council on May 20, Russia likened NATO members to "pirates of the Baltic Sea," citing an incident where Estonian patrol ships allegedly attempted to forcibly seize a tanker in international waters. The UN envoy's comments came on the back of Russian foreign ministry accusing NATO of trying to control Baltic shipping lanes, adding that Moscow would respond to any unlawful actions by vessels associated with the alliance's members.
