Trump explains U-turn, says he held off ‘biggest attack since world war II’ on Iran

Published on Aug 03, 2026 07:48 am IST

Donald Trump says he called off what he describes as a “massive” attack on Iran after Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Iran all asked Washington to hold fire because a deal outline had emerged on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and “denuclearizing” Iran, telling reporters the U.S. can strike “any time we want” but is giving negotiations—due to begin the next afternoon—space to potentially “save a lot of lives” and avoid an assault he claims would have been the biggest since World War II.
