Trump using ‘religion as a weapon’ against Nigeria? US threatens sanctions, Pentagon has this Plan
Published on Nov 21, 2025 04:49 pm IST
The United States is weighing new actions—including sanctions and counterterrorism cooperation through the Pentagon—to pressure Nigeria to better protect Christian communities and strengthen religious freedom. The plan is being developed under President Donald Trump, who has accused Nigeria of failing to stop violence against Christians and has threatened military action if Abuja does not act swiftly. Senior State Department official Jonathan Pratt told the House Foreign Affairs Committee that Washington is considering sanctions, intelligence-sharing changes, and revised security support as part of a broader strategy to “incentivize and compel” Nigeria to improve protections. The U.S. recently returned Nigeria to its "Countries of Particular Concern" list over alleged religious rights violations.
