Russia's Supreme Court ordered the closure of Memorial, the country's most prominent human rights group. The closure of Memorial International bookmarks a year in which Alexei Navalny, Kremlin's top critic, was jailed. The court ordered closure after prosecutors accused the group of failing to mark its publications with a ‘foreign agent’ label. Prosecutors also accused the group of denigrating the memory of the Soviet Union & rehabilitating ‘Nazi criminals’. The decision is the hardest blow yet to the organisation founded in 1989 by Soviet dissidents. The US condemned the closure of Memorial International, calling it an ‘affront’ to human rights.
