China drops ultimate threat amid escalating tensions with Japan: 'Question over Japan future…'
Published on Dec 17, 2025 09:36 am IST
China rejected criticism from Japan over its rising military spending, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun saying Tokyo has no right to comment on Beijing’s defence budget. Responding to claims that China’s military expenditure has grown sharply over two decades, Guo said the increases are lawful, reasonable and aimed at safeguarding national interests while meeting international responsibilities. The comments come amid renewed diplomatic friction, with Beijing also accusing Japan of misrepresenting agreements on Taiwan. Guo further raised concerns over the safety of Chinese students in Japan and addressed issues including Hong Kong media figure Jimmy Lai and Taiwan’s relations with Honduras.
