China’s parliament gives Xi Jinping the mandate to remain in office indefinitely

Updated on Mar 13, 2018 11:10 am IST

Xi Jinping has become China's most powerful leader since Mao Zedong 40 years ago. The country's parliament amended the constitution on March 11 and removed the two-term presidential limit. This has given Xi the power to remain in office indefinitely. Under the amended constitution, Xi could now have a lifetime to push his goal of turning China into a global economic powerhouse with a world-class military by mid-century. Activist, however, fear further tightening of already strict controls on media, civil society and religion.
