‘Chinese govt should be ashamed’: Australian PM hits out over ‘repugnant’ tweet

Updated on Nov 30, 2020 01:13 pm IST

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has lashed out at the Chinese government over a tweet by a Chinese official which shows a fake image of an Australian soldier appearing to kill a child. Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry had posted a tweet with a caption saying: 'shocked by murder of Afghan civilians & prisoners by Australian soldiers. We strongly condemn such acts, & call for holding them accountable.' The Australian PM called the tweet utterly outrageous and said that it cannot be justified on any basis whatsoever. 'The Chinese government should be totally ashamed of this post. It diminishes them in the world's eyes. I want to make a couple of points about this. Australia is seeking an apology from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from the Chinese government, for this outrageous post. There are undoubtedly tensions that exist between China and Australia, but this is not how you deal with them,' Morrison said during a press conference. 'It is a false image and a terrible slur on our great defence forces,' the Australian PM added. Watch the full video for all the details.
