- Daughter of Indonesia’s founding president converted to Hinduism from Islam. Sukmawati Sukarnoputri’s ‘Sudhi Wadani’ ceremony took place in Bali on Tuesday. Sukmawati is the daughter of Indonesia's founding president Sukarno and his third wife Fatmawati. Sukmawati was married to Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Arya Mangkunegara IX but got divorced in 1984. Sukmawati started her political career after her divorce & founded the Indonesian national party. The conversion ceremony coincided with Sukmawati’s 70th birthday. Reports suggest that the late balinese grandmother of Sukmawati influenced her decision to convert to hinduism. In 2018, hardline islamic groups filed a blasphemy complaint against Sukmawati Sukarnoputri. Sukmawati was accused of reciting a poem that insulted islam & issued an apology later. Islam is the largest religion in Indonesia & hinduism is one of the 6 official religions of the country.
