The Japanese government has formally apologised for forcibly sterilising people between 1948 and 1996 under a controversial eugenics law. The nation's parliament also cleared a legislation to provide $28,600 as compensation to each victim. 25,000 people are estimated to have been sterilised sans consent under the 1948 Eugenics Protection Law. Under the legislation, doctors could sterilise people with disabilities.
