Trump says won’t extend TikTok deadline to arrange US sale; China hits back

China has lashed out at the US President over the TikTok US sale row. After Trump said that TikTok said that TikTok would either have to shut down or find an American buyer by 15th September, 2020, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson accused the United States of abusing the concept of national security to act against companies from foreign countries. The Chinese official said that the US decision is also a denial of the market economy and goes against the tenets of fair competition that the US claims to adhere to. Accusing the US of oppressing companies from other countries including China, the spokesperson said that China reserves the right to take steps to protect the interests of their companies. This comes as ByteDance has been looking to pick a buyer so it can finalize a deal by mid-September and comply with Trump's order to divest TikTok's assets.
