Volunteers rescue stranded and abandoned pets in Colombia after landslide

Veterinarians join the rescue effort in Mocoa where a landslide destroyed communities and killed 301, as vulnerable animals search for food and shelter. Volunteers worked to help bring cats and dogs to shelters where veterinarians, aided by police offered hydration, food, vaccinations and medicine against parasites. They collected 90 canines and 28 felines by Wednesday (April 5) afternoon, which they hoped to pair with their owners or otherwise would be available for adoption. Several rivers burst their banks in the early hours of Saturday, sending water, mud and debris crashing down streets and into houses as people slept, destroying almost entirely the infrastructure of the southwestern city.
