China warns of burst dams

The death toll from China's deadliest earthquake in decade's climbed to nearly 15,000 on May 14. The officials warned of potential calamities from broken rivers and dams. Around 2,000 soldiers had been sent to repair serious cracks in the Zipingpu dam upriver from the earthquake-hit city of Dujiangyan. Authorities said that they were concerned about other rivers and dams strained to bursting point. Around 7,000 residents remain stranded near the two hydropower stations in Maoxian County which are seriously damaged.
