For the first time, Cubans with relatives living abroad can see them as they speak to them, thanks to a video calling application that has become a success on the Caribbean Island. Standing at one of the 35 Wi-Fi hotspots recently installed to provide Internet access across the country, Cubans can see their relatives' faces through an application called Imo. As opposed to other video calling applications such as Skype or Viber, Imo is not blocked and Cubans can download it for free on their Android smartphones. Still, the service is not affordable for every Cuban, given that the Wi-Fi hotspots cost 2 US dollars for an hour, while the average monthly salary is around 20 US dollars. Cubans are still not allowed to have Internet in their homes, although some use intranet connections linking dozens of apartments and homes in their neighbourhoods.
