Athletic Muslim girls in Minneapolis found their traditional clothing interfered with playing sports. Their solution: design their own sports attire that met both religious and physical requirements. "We actually focus on the basketball instead of our scarves," says Zubeda Chaffee, 14, basketball team member. Around the world, sportswear for Muslim women and girls is coming into its own through both opportunity and controversy. Last year, Qatar's national women's basketball team forfeited their match at an international competition because players were not allowed to wear hijabs during the games.
