In view of the mass shooting at the Sydney beach on Sunday during Hanukkah celebrations, major cities around the world, including Berlin, London and New York, have reportedly stepped up security for Hanukkah events.
As the New South Wales Police declared the Bondi Beach a terrorist attack, it said an improvised explosive device found in one of the suspect's cars. The police are probing the incident and a “number of suspicious items located in the vicinity” are being examined.
The shooting was a “targeted attack” on the Jewish community, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was quoted as saying by Bloomberg. He flagged an uncompromising crackdown on anti-Semitism. “We will eradicate it,” he said.
Meanwhile, Israel Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, accused Canberra of having fuelled antisemitism in the period leading up to the shooting. "A few months ago I wrote to the Australian prime minister that your policy is pouring oil on the fire of antisemitism," he said, referring to a letter he sent to Anthony Albanese in August following Canberra's announcement that it would recognise Palestinian statehood," he said.
"Antisemitism is a cancer that spreads when leaders are silent," Netanyahu added during a televised public address at an event in southern Israel.
Toll climbs to 16
At least 16 people have been killed in a mass shooting incident at Bondi Beach in Australia's Sydney on Sunday. Furthermore, at least 40 injured have been taken to hospitals across Sydney, said NSW police commissioner Mal Lanyon,
One of the two shooters involved in the firing incident is also among the dead, according to reports. While the second suspect has been identified as Naveed Akram.
World leaders condemn mass shooting
Responding to the deadly mass shooting at Sydney's Bondi Beach, world leaders expressed condolences as they condemned the attack.
India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi strongly condemned the ‘ghastly terrorist attack’ which he said targeted people celebrating the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. “On behalf of the people of India, I extend my sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. We stand in solidarity with the people of Australia in this hour of grief. India has zero tolerance towards terrorism and supports the fight against all forms and manifestations of terrorism,” Modi wrote on X.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog said Jewish people who had gone to light the first candle of the Hanukkah holiday on the beach had been attacked by "vile terrorists".
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said he was appalled by the shooting and that Australia's government must "come to its senses" after countless warnings.
"These are the results of the antisemitic rampage in the streets of Australia over the past two years, with the antisemitic and inciting calls of 'Globalise the Intifada' that were realised today."
Australia's Opposition leader Sussan Ley said, "Australians are in deep mourning tonight, with hateful violence striking at the heart of an iconic Australian community, a place we all know so well and love, Bondi."
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer termed the incident deeply distressing and said, "The United Kingdom sends our thoughts and condolences to everyone affected by the appalling attack in Bondi Beach."
Prime minister of New Zealand Christopher Luxon said, “Australia and New Zealand are closer than friends, we're family. I am shocked by the distressing scenes at Bondi, a place that Kiwis visit every day.”
