Conservative' populist leader Pierre Poilievre conceded defeat but assured that he and his party will continue to question and hold the minority government accountable.

The election comes months after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped down earlier this year amid rising food and housing prices and soaring immigration.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Canadian leader Mark Carney on his Liberal Party's electoral win and expressed his anticipation for greater opportunities between the two nations. Carney’s Liberal Party secured a historic victory in the Canadian elections.

Ties between India and Canada had been severely strained during Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's tenure.

Stakes were high due to the threat posed by tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. PM Mark Carney now faces a cost-of-living crisis and Trump's threat to impose sweeping tariffs on Canada, which sends more than 75% of its exports to the US.

Liberal leader and Prime Minister Mark Carney banked on his central banking experience to counter threats, while Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre's campaign focused on flagging past Liberal governance for Canada’s economic vulnerability to hostile American trade policies.
