US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he will not be imposing tariffs on several countries for their stance on Greenland. He said he had reached the outlines of a deal with NATO on the island's future. Track Trump-Greenland updates
"Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st," Trump wrote on Truth Social after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos.

Trump said the ‘solution' would be a ‘great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations’.
“Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he wrote.
Trump's surprise announcement came hours after he said that he wants to “get Greenland, including right, title and ownership,” but said he would not use force to do so while deriding European allies and vowing that NATO should not try to block US expansionism.

{{/usCountry}}During his speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Trump renewed his claim for Greenland which he described as a "cold and poorly located” territory. He said the US had effectively saved Europe during World War II and even declared of NATO: “It’s a very small ask compared to what we have given them for many, many decades.”
“We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be frankly unstoppable. But I won’t do that, OK?” Trump said, later adding, “I don’t have to" and "I don’t want to use force.”

Trump last week threatened eight European countries with tariffs for their opposition to his Greenland demand. Trump said he would charge a 10% import tax starting February 1 on goods from eight European nations including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland.
