Protests against falling economy spread across Iran since December 28, and quickly turned political with protesters demanding an end to clerical rule, led by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Authorities accuse the US and Israel of fueling the unrest.
Iran protests | Highlights
-Iran protest death toll: Since the protests began last month, over 3,400 have reportedly died in Iranian regime's crackdown on the protesters, which has also prompted US to issue warnings of stepping in.
-US sanctions Iran officials, over a dozen entities: US imposed sanctions over several Iranian officials for their alleged role in the crackdown on anti-government protests. The Treasury Department targeted the secretary of the Supreme Council for National Security and also imposed sanctions on 18 people and companies involved in a shadow banking network linked to Iranian financial institutions.
-Iran airspace shut briefly: Iran briefly closed its airspace to commercial flights without explanation early Thursday as tensions remained high with the US. The closure lasted almost five hours. Though the airspace was reopened, several European airlines are reportedly avoiding the airspace over Iran and Iraq.
-US withdraws troops from Middle East bases: The airspace closure also came parallelly to US's reported withdrawal of some personnel from bases in the Middle East. A US official said on Wednesday that troops were being moved after a senior Iranian official said Tehran had warned neighbours it would hit American bases if Washington strikes, Reuters reported.
-Iran internet blackout: Iran has imposed one of the most extensive internet blackouts seen in recent years to limit communication and independent reporting.
-China dials Tehran: China’s foreign minister Wang Yi on Thursday dialed his Iranian counterpart and said that Beijing opposes the use of force in international relations, following US threats of an attack after Tehran’s violent crackdown against protesters.
-UNSC emergency meeting: The UN Security Council scheduled an emergency meeting Thursday to discuss Iran's deadly protests after a request from the United States.
