Navi Pillay wins Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to Pillay, a South African judge known for her work in international law. She led the tribunal that investigated the Rwanda genocide and later headed a United Nations commission that accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. Israel strongly rejected the findings.

Pillay is also a judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in a case in which Myanmar is accused of genocide. Throughout her career, she has worked to uphold international law and hold those responsible for serious crimes to account.

Jorgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo, said Pillay had been "instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are prosecuted".
