New Zealand Police apologised on social media on Monday after posting a tweet that appeared to joke about informing family members of the victims killed in car crashes.
Police posted a meme featuring Steve Carell from the comedy show The Office. The gif reads: “This is the worst.”
Twitter users denounced the police’s tweet, with some calling it “tone deaf” and “inconsiderate”.
New Zealand Police then deleted the post and apologised in another tweet: “We apologise for the recent road safety tweet. We quickly realised it was wrong & insensitive & it was immediately deleted. Thx for feedback. (sic)”

There were some deadly road crashes in the country this weekend. Nine people were killed in New Zealand from Friday to Monday morning and the total number of accident deaths had reached 292, the police had said in a statement before.
The police force regularly posts images of service animals and statistics regarding crimes on their social media accounts.
