A pregnant woman committed suicide by setting her self ablaze after she was raped for revenge on orders of a village council in Pakistan.
The woman, who was in her 20s, told police from her deathbed that she was impregnated by a man who raped her five months ago after a panchayat in Gujrat district ordered it. The rape was punishment for her father’s attempt to molest a minor girl in the village.
The woman set herself alight two weeks ago when her husband returned from abroad after a couple of years. She was hospitalised but eventually succumbed to her injuries.
Police said the village panchayat had passed the diktat after the woman’s father was caught attempting to molest a minor. As punishment, the minor’s father was allowed to rape the woman. However, the woman’s father denied the charge.
Police arrested 10 people in connection with the incident and registered a case in the matter.
