US House to vote to override Donald Trump veto

The US House of Representatives will vote Tuesday to try and override President Donald Trump’s veto of a resolution passed earlier by congress overturning his declaration of emergency to fund his promised wall along the border with Mexico.

The Democratic-led House needs roughly 290 votes, two-thirds, to override the veto, which would require many more Republicans to join Democrats to oppose the president than when the chamber first passed the resolution, which was by a simple majority.

The Republican-led senate is also unlikely to come up with two-third majority, 66 votes, needed to override the veto when it takes it up for a vote.

The president’s emergency declaration has been seen as an attempt by the executive branch to go around congress to find money for the wall denied to it by congress, which holds the government’s pursestrings. And many Republicans had defied their president and the party to vote to pass the Democrat-authored resolution in both chambers, despite the fact that many of them supported the president’s wall.

But not enough of them are expected to break from their party now to override the presidential veto.

The US department of defense has announced, at the same meantime, it has transferred $1 billion for constructing 57 miles of the president’s wall drawing instant criticism from Democrats.
