The ‘Good Trouble Lives On’ protests are the latest in a series of rallies conducted to challenge the Trump administration’s policies on voting rights and immigration laws. Scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 17, the movement is meant to honor former Congressman John Lewis’s fifth death anniversary and takes inspiration from his active role in guaranteeing civil liberties by deeming peaceful protests as “good trouble, necessary trouble”.

Who is organizing the movement and why?

The movement is primarily being organized by the Transformative Justice Coalition, Black Voters Matter, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, League of Women Voters, the Declaration for American Democracy Coalition, and Mi Familia en Acción, in coalition with a few other groups.

Multiple pro-democracy activist groups are banding together to organize a series of rallies across the country under the banner of the ‘Good Trouble Lives On’ protest movement. “The Trump administration’s recent escalating authoritarian actions, attacks on DEI initiatives and voting rights, and dismantling of government agencies have raised alarm bells for democracy advocates, and that’s why we’re mobilizing,” reads an official press release issued by the organizers.

The movement is meant to challenge the SAVE Act (could possibly disenfranchise millions of voters), mass deportation and detention campaigns against immigrants, crackdown on peaceful protests, and abuse of federal power, as reported by USA Today.

“Organizers hope to build on the momentum from the historic “No Kings” mass mobilization on June 14, the largest demonstration to take place in Trump’s second term with over 2,100 events spanning across all 50 states. We will take to the streets, courthouses, and community spaces to carry forward his fight for justice, voting rights, and dignity for all,” the press release adds.

This protest takes inspiration from previous similar examples from Trump’s second term such as the Tesla Takedown in March, Hands Off! and 50501 in April, May Day, No Kings in June, and Free America on Independence Day.
