The Pittsburgh Steelers are actively addressing several roster needs as they approach free agency, and acquiring two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a second-round pick is such a bold move.

Two-time Pro Bowl receiver will be heading back to Seattle, according to NFL Insider Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, who reports Pittsburgh will send back a 2025 2nd-round draft pick.

Steelers sign Metcalf to historic $150M deal

The Steelers signed him to a five-year, $150 million contract, the largest deal ever given to a wide receiver in franchise history. The QB's $33 million in new money annually is tied for the 4th highest total received annually at the receiver position in the NFL with Brandon Aiyuk and Tyreek Hill.

“The $33M new money average makes it the largest deal in franchise history,” Pelissero wrote on X.

Notably, his presence not only fills a key roster need but also creates opportunities for younger players. For rising star George Pickens, Metcalf’s arrival could be transformative. As the primary target since Diontae Johnson’s departure, Pickens has faced heavy defensive attention. With Metcalf drawing coverage, Pickens could thrive in more favourable matchups.

The Steelers entered the 2025 offseason intent on acquiring a top-tier receiver, whether through free agency, the draft, or a trade. With Metcalf now in place, the front office can shift its focus to other areas of need, such as bolstering the offensive line or adding an impact defender with the 21st overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Some may argue that giving up a second-round pick for Metcalf was steep, but for an elite receiver in his prime, the price is reasonable.
