At least one person was killed and 37 injured on Monday when police opened fire to control a mob in Nepal's Saptari district as the general strike in the southern plains entered the thirteenth day.
According to the police, one Goltan Das was killed when security forces opened fire to prevent a mob from defying prohibitory orders in the district.
The administration issued the prohibitory orders in the morning fearing violence from regional parties in the Terai seeking greater political and economic rights for the ethnic community living in the southern plains, The Himalayan Times online said.
Many of the injured have been rushed to BPKIHS, Dharan for treatment, the report said.
At least 200 people have been killed in the Terai plains in ethnic and communal unrest since the landmark peace pact between the Nepal Maoists and the mainstream parties were inked in November 2006.
The spill over from the indefinite blockade in southern Nepal called by the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) alliance threatens to disrupt the crucial polls in the country on April 10.
