ABC News reported the man has erected a sign with a series of demands and is holding police at bay. Police have confirmed the hostage situation but are not releasing any more information.

Police, ambulance and firefighters are at the scene -- a park-- near the corner of Koombana Drive, the main thoroughfare into the town, and Blair Street.

There were reports on social media that snipers have arrived on the scene and have circled the park.

Pictures on Twitter appeared to show armed police officers, wearing bulletproof vests lying on the ground in front of a large sign.

Members of the public have been asked to stay away, the Independent reported. More details awaited.
