The US military said on Wednesday it had launched a fresh round of strikes on Iran to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remained open to maritime traffic. US airstrikes carried out across Iran over the past two days have killed at least 14 people and injured another 78, Iran's health ministry said on Thursday.
The fresh flareup comes at a time when Iran is preparing for the burial of its slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in US strikes on February 28.
Iran launched attacks on Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait on Wednesday in response to an earlier wave of US airstrikes on its territory. Hours later, the US carried out fresh strikes after President Donald Trump said recent Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz showed that the fragile ceasefire had effectively come to an end.
The latest escalation heightened concerns that the conflict in West Asia could flare up again. It came just a day after the US military struck several military installations and port facilities following Iran's attacks on multiple merchant ships off the coast of Oman.
Latest US strikes hit 90 military targets
US military officials said on Wednesday that around 90 Iranian military targets were struck in the latest wave of attacks. The targets included air defence systems, missile and drone storage facilities, and other military assets.
According to a statement posted on X by United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the US "completed an additional round of strikes against Iran, July 8, to further degrade Iran's ability to attack commercial shipping and innocent civilian mariners in the Strait of Hormuz."
Oil prices rise after fresh escalations
Oil prices edgeed higher on Thursday after the US launched another round of strikes on Iran, reducing expectations that the conflict would end soon and raising fresh concerns over the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Brent crude futures gained 78 cents, or 1 per cent, to $78.8 a barrel by 0054 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate crude futures climbed 74 cents, or 1.01 per cent, to $74.26 a barrel.
Both Brent and West Texas Intermediate crude extended their gains in after-hours trading on Wednesday, rising by more than a dollar after the United States military began carrying out fresh strikes on Iran.
Strikes raise fears that war could resume
Trump heightened fears of a renewed conflict after declaring that the interim agreement to suspend fighting was "over". However, he said talks would still be allowed to continue.
The ceasefire has come under repeated strain from attacks in recent days, but Trump's remarks added to uncertainty and pushed oil prices higher. Any return to full-scale fighting could draw more countries in the region into the conflict and once again disrupt energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
“For me, I think it’s over,” Trump said when asked about the status of the ceasefire. He added that US representatives can continue negotiations, but he cast doubt on the outcome. “They can talk, but I think they’re wasting their time,” he said.
Iranian deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi, who is also one of the country's lead negotiators, responded on X, saying Trump's remarks “are not a sign of power but an admission of the failure” of US policy toward Iran.

US-Iran war LIVE: Gold steadied near $4,120 an ounce after ending a three-session losing streak, as investors weighed escalating tensions in the Middle East against expectations that the US Federal Reserve could keep interest rates higher for longer.
The market remained on edge after renewed exchanges of airstrikes between the US and Iran, although talks between the two countries are continuing, according to a US official. The latest flare-up has cast doubt on the interim peace deal signed last month and raised concerns over the safe passage of oil and other commodities through the Strait of Hormuz.
For bullion investors, rising geopolitical risks have been tempered by the prospect of tighter US monetary policy.

US-Iran war LIVE: Oman has told European officials there’s no way of going back to the pre-war status quo with the Strait of Hormuz and transiting ships may have to be charged some fees, according to people familiar with the matter.
While Omani officials said they will always abide by international maritime law, they added there could be fees for services related to de-polluting the strait or helping ships navigate it, the people said, asking not to be named discussing private matters. It’s unclear if Oman said all these fees would be obligatory.
Oman is analyzing systems used for chokepoints across the globe, including the Malacca strait in Asia, said the people, an area where there are no mandatory shipping charges.
The US, Europe and Oman’s Gulf Arab neighbors are increasingly concerned the sultanate will set up a tolling or fee system with Iran for the Strait of Hormuz.
