US-Iran war LIVE: Futures for the S&P 500 rose 0.1% before the opening bell Thursday, while futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.1%. Nasdaq futures were up 0.5%.

Oil prices inched up again Thursday, with Brent crude, the international standard, rising 64 cents to to $78.66 per barrel. It briefly topped $80 on Wednesday. Before the Iran war began, Brent oil was trading at around $72 a barrel. Earlier optimism over an interim peace deal recently brought it back to prewar levels.

Benchmark U.S. crude rose 54 cents to $74.06 a barrel.

He has been missing from the public sphere since his father and other family members were killed in US airstrikes on February 28 that left him gravely injured.

US-Iran war LIVE: Braving sweltering heat and calling for revenge, Iranians loyal to the Islamic republic massed on Thursday for the burial of slain supreme leader Ali Khamenei in his hometown of Mashhad.

An Israeli strike killed Khamenei in late February on the first day of the Middle East war, bringing an end to his more than three and a half decades in power.

Thousands of people filled the streets of the eastern city of Mashhad, home to one of the holiest sites in the Shia strain of Islam that is prevalent in Iran.

With new hostilities breaking out with the United States even after an accord last month to end the war, at least one fighter jet escorted the plane carrying the late Iranian leader's coffin to Mashhad.

The burial will be the final act in a marathon six days of funeral ceremonies which have allowed people to pay tribute in Tehran, the clerical hub of Qom and also Iraq.

Men wore black shirts while women were clad in black chadors, many waving the red flags that symbolise the search for vengeance in Shia Islam, AFP correspondents said.

"People here all seek revenge," said Mohammad Afsharian, 41, a shop owner.

"I don't know what's the story with diplomacy and what's the policy to continue diplomacy but all the people are carrying red flags in a sign of seeking revenge," he said.

His remarks came aboard the Air Force One plane, after the reporters he was interacting with were asked to shut the blinds next to their seats. As one of the media personnel asked Trump what the reason for this directive could be, he answered: “Because you are probably on a dangerous flight because of the sleazebags we have to deal with. These (Iranians) are sick people...,” Trump said.

Another reporter asked the US President if he faces a threat from Iran, to which he said: I have a threat all the time. I'm number one on their list, before you (addressing the reporters). But if I go, you go." In the same vein, he also said the press may want to switch professions.

US-Iran war LIVE: The United States targeted the perimeter of Iran's only civilian nuclear plant with a strike on Thursday, Iranian state media reported, citing the deputy governor of Bushehr province.

"Several areas in Bushehr province were targeted today, including the perimeter of the nuclear power plant, a military base in the town of Choghadak and a fishing pier in the south of the province," Ehsan Jahanian said, adding there were no reports of casualties so far.

It came after residents of Choghadak, which sits a little more than 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the Bushehr plant, reported hearing several explosions.

Strikes have previously landed near the power station during the Middle East war.

In April, the UN's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, warned that attacks near the plant "pose a very real danger to nuclear safety and must stop".

The power station, built with Russian help, has one operational reactor and two further ones under construction. Russia evacuated its staff from the site during the war.

Non-profit monitor ACLED has reported four strikes near the plant during the war.

US-Iran war LIVE: The United States launched new airstrikes against Iran early Thursday, and Tehran responded by targeting U.S.-allied Mideast countries in an exchange of fire that threatened an interim deal intended to help end the war in the Middle East.

Back-and-forth attacks, including a day earlier, have repeatedly threatened the ceasefire, but Thursday’s appeared bigger all around, with sirens sounding at least three times in Bahrain, home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters, and missiles targeting Kuwait and Qatar.

Sirens sounded Thursday afternoon in Jordan as well, where the U.S. has stationed troops and aircraft.

An Iranian official accused the U.S. of launching an airstrike later Thursday targeting the area around Iran's sole nuclear power plant, and other explosions were reported elsewhere in the country during the afternoon.

The strikes came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said recent Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz signaled the end of a fragile ceasefire and threatened to escalate the conflict if they didn't stop. That raised concerns that the region could tip back into a war that would engulf several countries and could halt energy shipments through the strait that are crucial for the global economy.

In Iran, the two days of American airstrikes have killed at least 14 people and wounded another 78, Iran’s Health Ministry said Thursday — most of those reportedly members of the armed forces.

US-Iran war LIVE: Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz came to a near standstill on Thursday after the US struck Iran for a second straight day, as a fragile truce between the two sides looked increasingly shaky.

Observable movements in the world’s most vital energy conduit largely occurred along an Iran-approved route nearer to the waterway’s north, while the US-supported Omani corridor was quiet, ship-tracking data show. Among larger vessels, only a US-sanctioned supertanker heading out of the Persian Gulf was seen in the strait, alongside an Iranian-flagged container ship.

Some vessels crossed on Wednesday with their transponders turned off. An India-flagged supertanker that had aborted an earlier attempt to transit Hormuz reappeared in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday, indicating it had made the crossing in the dark. A United Arab Emirates-linked bulk carrier did the same, resurfacing off Fujairah on Thursday, according to vessel-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.

As the war has gone on, it’s become increasingly evident that some oil tankers have been sailing through Hormuz with their transponders off to lower the risk of attack by Iranian forces. With three attacks on big oil and gas tankers this week, it’s very possible that the practice has resumed. Information about those dark transits takes several days to emerge.

The traffic slowdown comes after Iranian attacks on vessels prompted US strikes, while President Donald Trump declared that the ceasefire with Iran was over. Some 20 commodity carriers crossed the strait in either direction on Wednesday, fresh data from Kpler show, making it one of the thinnest traffic flows since the interim peace deal in mid-June.

It’s a stark shift from recent daily activity in the strait. In the three weeks since the US and Iran agreed to an interim deal to reopen Hormuz, average daily transits of commodity vessels was at 34, with a peak of 59 on June 24, Kpler data show. That compares with a wartime daily count of less than 20 on most days.

US-Iran war LIVE: As US and Iran resumed strikes on Thursday, several explosions were heard in Iran's Bushehr province, home to Iran's only civilian nuclear power plant, the Fars news agency reported.

Residents of Choghadak, around 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the plant, reported hearing the blasts, but "official news about the exact location of the explosions has not yet been released", Fars said. Strikes have previously landed near the power station during the Middle East war.

US-Iran war LIVE: Bushehr governor has said that the nuclear plant in the province is safe and was not attacked in the US air strikes on Thursday morning. Mohammad Mozaffari told Iranian state media that reports of US attack on key Kharg Island were also inaccurate.

“No incidents have been recorded at these two locations,” Mozaffari said, according to ISNA.

US-Iran war LIVE: In a fresh warning, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the US can no longer pursue policies of bullying and reneging on its commitments without facing consequences.

Ghalibaf made the remarks after fresh US strikes on Iran, targeting civilian infrastructure and a bridge in the northern province of Golestan.

"The United States has still not learned that bullying and breach of commitments no longer come without a cost," he said in a post on X.

US-Iran war LIVE: Iran has alleged that overnight US strikes hit the Aq Taqeh Khan railway bridge in northern Iran's Golestan province, Fars news agency said on Thursday, a trade link to Tehran's strategic partners China and Russia.

Fars said the route that goes on to pass through Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan has been an important land link to China which gained further relevance during this year's blockade of Iran's Gulf ports by the US.

It added that the route had also been used by Russia for cargo shipments to Iran since late 2025. The agency said repairs to the bridge were expected to be completed quickly.
