'Myanmar death toll rises to 38,491'

According to state radio, the earlier death toll on Tuesday was 34,273. However, the UN warns the number of dead is likely to exceed 100,000.

The death toll from Cyclone Nargis which hit Myanmar on May 3 has risen to 38,491, with 27,838 people missing, state radio said on Wednesday.

The new toll was raised from figures of 34,273 dead and 27,836 missing which were issued on Tuesday.

As well as the dead and missing, another 1,403 were injured, state radio said.

However, the United Nations has warned the number of dead likely to exceed100,000, and that many more may die unless vital aid reaches up to two million survivors.
