While Afghanistan along with the current economic crisis dominated the US-Canada summit in Ottawa, the Swat peace deal and the need to draw "clarity" on it from Pakistan also popped up in talks between US President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Obama was in Ottawa, the Canadian Capital, for a day on his maiden overseas trip as the US President.
"They both discussed in general terms the recent agreement -- Pakistanis on Swat, and hoping to get more clarity from the Pakistanis about just what had been accomplished there," said Deputy Secretary of State, Jim Steinberg.
Talking to correspondents accompanying the President abroad Air Force One on way back to Washington, Steinberg said the two leaders discussed in detail the current situation in the region of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
"They talked about the challenges of defining the goals and objectives," he said, adding Obama "talked about the strategic review that's underway, and our expectations that we would be able to be more clear about what we thought the way forward was at the end of that."
Steinberg said Obama and Harper agreed that in the long term, the success would depend on development and governance- related issues, and both the countries needed to have a common approach on that.
