UK preparing to deal with Mumbai-style attack

Britain is training ministers and security experts to meet the challenge posed by a potential Mumbai-style terrorist attack, security minister Baroness Neville-Jones has said.

Britain is training ministers and security experts to meet the challenge posed by a potential Mumbai-style terrorist attack, security minister Baroness Neville-Jones has said.

Speaking at a Royal United Services Institute conference in central London on Tuesday on terrorism in Britain, the minister said that security personnel as well as ministers were involved in mock scenarios to deal with terrorist attacks.

She said the UK was preparing "to be able to respond to a terrorist incident like the world witnessed in Mumbai", and added that the country faced a "serious and sustained" threat which had not diminished in recent years.

She said, "The possibility of a scenario similar to the devastating incident in Mumbai in 2008 is one for which we must be prepared.

"We have been training more officers to respond to armed attack and enhancing the existing levels of firearms training. Police and other emergency responders have been working together to improve their response."

Baroness said training exercises involving ministers were "very testing", and added: "It clearly is only a fraction of the pressures ministers will face in a real situation.
