US police evacuated a three-block stretch of suburban housing on Sunday as they moved in on the home of a gunman they shot dead after an attack on a Sikh temple killed six more people.
Police at a roadblock in Cudahy, a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin around four kilometers (2.5 miles) north of the temple, could be seen ushering out residents from the area. One officer told AFP the area was being cleared.
A fire truck carrying eight heavily-armed officers, four of whom were in the basket mounted on the ladder, rolled by into the secure zone.
"It's a little more exciting than I'd like to have in my front yard. If I was worried, I'd leave. I'm not quite there yet, but we have a bag packed," said 33-year-old business analyst Cori Becker, who lives just outside the cordon.
Residents described the neighborhood as pleasant and peaceful.
Earlier, a gunman described by witnesses as a tall, bald-headed white man had stormed a Sikh temple or Gurudwara a short distance further south in another suburb, Oak Creek. He opened fire and killed six people.
Police were called to the scene and one officer was critically wounded with multiple gunshots before a second shot the gunman dead. Two more victims were also taken to a Milwaukee hospital with critical gunshot wounds.
