Deemed private university Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) has announced it will establish its third campus near Bhopal, with the other two in Vellore and Chennai.
The foundation stone will be laid by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the presence of minister for higher education Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya and founder and chancellor of VIT University G Viswanathan on October 20 at Kothri Kalan, on the Bhopal-Indore Highway in Sehore district.
The decision of the establishment of the university was taken at the Global Investors Summit (GIS) by signing a memorandum of understanding.
“We will set up the new university with an investment of Rs 500 crore in phases, in an area of over 100 acres,” Viswanathan said. “In future, we will also think over setting up a medical college as there is a huge shortage of doctors in the state.”
He also said that VIT is the first university in the country to receive the US’s prestigious Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET), certification.
According to the VIT administration, about 991 students from MP are studying in VIT, and the institute had received 15,000 applications from the state during their 2016 engineering entrance examination. The establishment of the VIT Bhopal University will cater the growing demand for quality education and support in technological developments in the state, they said.
